“Walden showed in her Eisner-winning graphic novel “Spinning” that she can tenderly render love and loss. In “Sunbeam,” she conveys such feelings while tripping between timelines — and her interstellar boarding school is a beautifully realized world.”

On a Sunbeam is a graphic novel by Ignatz Award winner author and cartoonist Tillie Walden that is about a girl who travels to the ends of the universe to find a long lost love. On a Sunbeam was first published as a webcomic from 2016 to 2017 and it was later on adapted to a graphic novel by the award-winning author.
The story starts with a disorganized crew travels to the extreme far down reaches of space rebuilding broken but beautiful structures to join the past together. Then it unfolds the meeting of two girls in freshman year in a boarding school that leads to a deep romantic affair between them, followed by heartbreak, loss, and pain. The novel also focuses on the protagonist’s two main parts of her life. First one is the period at the boarding school, while the other is set five years later where the protagonist starts her maiden job after graduating from the boarding school.
The graphic novel has spectacular art depicting two stories interwoven in dual narrative, in different timelines in a classic pursuit for love and breathtaking romance in a make belief world.
On a Sunbeam has been named as one of The Washington Post’s “10 Best Graphic Novels of 2018”, a School Library Journal Best Book of 2018, and a Publisher’s Weekly Best Book of 2018. The graphic novel has received a starred review from Booklist, Publishers Weekly, and School Library Journal. The book was favorably reviewed by The Atlantic, Kirkus, The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books, and Horn Book.
